I am following in the beautiful footsteps of my dear friend (since high school...wow) susi, who has inspired me to run a marathon before I head off to Indonesia for my dissertation research next Fall. I swam competitively from when I was four through college --- but since the day I realized that I didn't actually *have* to swim everyday, have had a hard time really pushing myself. I would road-bike, jog, lift weights and do yoga to cross-train throughout high school and college, but these days I walk a lot (about an hour a day)and jog occasionally(maybe 2-3 times a week). Running has always been a major mental challenge for me -- even when I was in the best shape swim-wise, I would be gasping for air running just a mile. So! I really want to get back into touch with my athletic self -- and hopefully by training for a marathon I'll learn that I *can* run, which would be a really practical way to stay in shape while abroad.
